Pyre of Dreams is the fourth release from Persephone’s Dream and offers 12 songs full of energy, drive, groove, and engaging melodies. Vocalists Colleen Gray and Heidi Engel contribute their considerable talents as well as DC Cooper, who provides guest vocals on two tracks and background vocals on several others. Lyrics comprise deep slices of poetic fantasy, mythology and science fiction, as evidenced by the five-song conceptual track Temple in Time, a reflection of the enchanted Isle of Avalon and the anguish of King Arthur. The dynamic musical arrangements wander through a landscape of styles, allowing for mytho-poetic progressive art rock at its finest.

...So … what can you expect from Pyre Of Dreams? Progressive rock with a dash of metal thrown in. It's a slinky, smoky affair that for the most part remains mellow, dark and throbby. If I had to pin down the band's sound here, I'd need more than one pin, since there are various elements all woven together. It's not in anyway a chaotic or non-flowing mix of styles. No, this all seems very organic; almost like a concept album in the way it easily flows from one moment, one mood, to another. Part of its flow and seductiveness is owed to vocalists Colleen Grey and Heidi Engel. Grey possesses one of those rich, sweet and sultry voices that imbues the tracks with a strong emotional and emotive content. Engel's voice is equally strong and sultry, but in a different way - in fact, she I'd say she most sounds like Christina Amphlett (DiVinyls). Her voice soars and is "sweeter" then Grey's, but also manages to have an earthy undertone, as heard on the seductive "Aphrodite"… but then Aphrodite was the goddess of love and fertility, so you'd expect her to be a seductress, no? And although it is not what she sings, there's one line that does sound like "breed with me" (it's "breathe"), but thinking it struck me as funny. Engel also takes lead on "Nimiane," "Soliloquy" and "Camlann" section of "Temple Of Time." They are worthy inheritors of the role from Karin Nicely, who was the band's previous vocalist. ...

...The new and main features here are the two (instead of one) female vocalists and the "electronica" experimental passages. The moody atmosphere dominates the songs and it's up to your subjective judgment, if it suits you. "Pyre of Dreams" leads the band to a new territory, expanding even more its musical ideas so that they can sound appealing to an average listener, without detriment to the diversity of their music. In fact we are dealing with a band, which is based on musicianship and songwriting and it's glad to perform songs that often come from different genres. Referring to their influences, I must confess that Mostly Autumn, Renaissance and Gong come to mind. Besides which, the keyboards and bass driven sound also makes me happy. The lyrics are finished to the fingernail, although sometimes they seem to be more inexplicit than they're supposed to be...

This is one album that really, and I do mean really had to grow on me. As much as we get fed our massive projects with multiple singers/players that revolve around a concept (weak Ayreon clones/wannabee's), it just gets old. There is something different about Pyre of Dreams, and it is that difference that made me appreciate this disc more and more, listen after listen. Having DC Cooper behind the board as co-producer for this definitely helped; he didn’t make this another watered down Consortium or Ayreon carbon-copy. Think of Pyre of Dreams as Dio’s Magica crossed with The Moody Blues Long Distance Voyager, with two female vocalists fronting all of this (along with Cooper appearing on a couple)...

...Pyre of Dreams is one of those CD's that you can listen to over and over, and each time you uncover something different. If you like female fronted progressive metal bands, but maybe would like to hear something a little less bombastic, give this one a try...

...The vocal tracks are split between two amazing female vocalists, Colleen Gray and Heidi Engel. Each vocalist portrays the intended mood successfully; Gray appears on the more laidback, melodic pieces such as "Threnody" and "Synesthesia". The former is an excellent opener, lending itself to 80's pop rock during its chorus but quickly morphing into its prog-laden roots thanks to Rowen Poole's amazing guitar theme that is utilisted recurringly through the piece. The melody here is simply sublime; it works beautifully amidst distant percussion, weird sound effects, and the harmonized vocalization. "Synthesia", on the other hand, is a heavier song, delving into almost RIO territory thanks to its remarkable use of dissonant guitar voicings and evil synth lines. The ending part, however, completely belies its roots, bringing forth acoustic and electric guitars draped over a fat bass bottom...

...Where it works best for me is on the opening trio of songs. Threnody is a great slice of female-fronted, progressive, modern rock - with a folky tinge. There's a simply-effective melody to the verse and chorus, a nice crunch to the guitar, a lovely groove to the rhythm and the whole thing benefits from some lovely, open dynamics. Syneschesia has a darker and slightly heavier vibe but again benefits from some clever changes of pace and an organ that gives it a 60s progressive vibe. Crypyoendolich shifts between the rock anthem melodies of Simple Minds and Xinema, with the progressive moods of White Willow and again has a good mix of dynamics and mood. However, I just can't see that listeners who would enjoy those songs, will also go for the new age-ish mood of Alien Embassy, where the lyrics tell how 'Sweet Apollo in emerald bright' was 'wound up in protean flight'. And if there are such listeners, then will they also enjoy the rather twee, folky, new age approach to story of King Arthur?..

...This is a band that got its start back in the late eighties and has persevered through the years performing live in clubs and festivals. Musically Persephone’s Dream have tended to fall into a kind dreamy, almost Pink Floyd inspired blend of spacey, gothic prog. Keyboards form atmospheric layers, building tension and release, while guitars alternate between solid heavy crunch and delicate soaring leads. The songs run anywhere from two to nine minutes in length with style and tempo transitions occurring seamlessly at every turn. Pyre of Dreams does have as its centre piece the five-part epic Arthurian tale entitled “Temple in Time” which runs 23-minutes in length. Even here there are no jarring moments where the music turns on a dime, rather changes in time and tempo are accomplished with a certain degree of finesse. The music seems to actually approach a change before making the transition completely which makes for a deceptive flow. And when you combine the fact that a number of the compositions flow together it gives the feeling of longer compositions. The vocals from Heidi Engel and Colleen Gray provide the perfect style for the moody music. The songs tend to be about myths and legends and require that epic tone, while projecting a certain mystery, dreaminess and melancholy and both are superb in their own way painting pictures in the mind’s eye...

...PERSEPHONE'S DREAM, you see, are most surely not progressive in the sense of trying to wow the listener with note-per-second, spazzed-out time changes or dissonance for the sake of being artsy. But, they are absolutely progressive as hell when it comes to writing songs that are utterly different & captivating in both the musical & lyrical sense. This is not a band who are "heavy" in the crushing-riff sense of the word. What they are heavy in is atmosphere and feeling. Check out "Synesthesia," "Nightfall" or the multi-part "Temple In Time," PERSEPHONE'S DREAM's most ambitious work thusfar. Distorted guitars exist, but in support of lush melodies, deft-yet-tempered playing and gorgeous female vocals, a wonderful pallette on which the song becomes the piece of art. Other favourites include the sci-fi-laden of "Alien Embassy" and the erotic "Aphrodite." Truly, Heidi Engel's vocal performance here is one of the most utterly sensual I've ever heard & I would recommend most men not listen to it while driving or operating heavy machinery! In all, "Pyre Of Dreams" is simply a great album by a band who's continued to get better every step of the way & it comes highly recommended from these quarters!

...The stronger songs of the album are probably the ones with the speed a bit above the album average - "Synesthesia" and "Android Dreams." However, as I mentioned earlier "Aphrodite" draws attention because of similarities with older songs and standing out with different vocals. In addition, "Camlann" is mighty in the very medieval sense of the word, great song with DC Cooper on vocals. Some will also find the percussion interlude "Cryptoendolith" interesting, but that one is not really surprising since one of the previous albums featured a whole 12 minute such "interlude." In addition, it is of interest to point out that lyrically one of the songs is based on I. Asimov's novel "Nightfall," "Android Dreams" is based on "Blade Runner" movie, and a five song concept piece "Temple in Time" is circling around the theme of death of King Arthur and Avalon...
